Pride Month

Note: Before reading this, please know that the information might be sensitive to some of you so please read it with a warning.

Have you heard of Pride Month? It's an event which is held in honor to the LGBT family in the world because of the Stonewall Riots that occured in June 1969. If you haven't heard it, Pride Month is celebrated every June in the US for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Let me give you a bit more detail into these for a better understanding.

At the beginning, our world started with two genders: female and male. Now, we have more genders which are more in detail. Lesbian are females who are attracted to other females. However, if you are lesbian, it doesn't mean you categorize as a male. Gay, on the other hand, are males who are attracted to other males. In the same way as lesbians, they are still male. Bisexual means that an individual is attracted to both females and male. Lastly, transgender means that an individual has gone through physical changes to become the other gender.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the LGBT community, let me discuss to you about Pride Month. Pride Month came into being because of the Stonewall Riots which were a series of demonstrations by members of the gay community. These riots happened because on one June night in 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn . It is where the LGBT community took shelter because at the time being, LGBT was illegal in the US. These types of raids were frequent, but on this specific night, they decided to fight back.

Here are the main events of the Stonewall Riots:

June 24, 1969

Police arrest Stonewall Staff and confiscate alcohol

June 27-28, 1969

Stonewall crowd fights back at the arrest of the LGBT staff

June 28, 1969 (Early Morning)

Transgender women resist arrest and threw bottles at the police

June 28, 1969 (4 a.m.)

Police retreat

June 28-29, 1969

Stonewall reopens, but police tear into the crowd

June 29-July 1, 1969

Stonewall was made the meeting point for the LGBT community

July 2, 1969

Gay activists argue at the newspaper coverage

In conclusion, Pride Month was made for a cause to show importance to the other genders in our society and to give them the respect they deserve. Like us, they are humans too and their gender is up to them. The community, other people, and anyone who is against them have no right to tell them that being part of the LGBT community is not acceptable. The world should be able to accept everyone for who they are as we are all equal in every way. Let's celebrate Pride Month and respect the LGBT community.
